The secret of Giovanni and Pinuccia Gillardi lies entirely in the selection of the grapes: in fact they use only the best bunches, less than half of what they harvest, for their 25000 bottles. Furthermore, for a few years now their son Giaculin, has been making a wine based on syrah which gets better year by year. This is Harys!

This has to be one of the most unusual wines Ive tasted this decade. It is produced in Piedmonte, [the home of the famous Nebbiolo] from 80% Syrah and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and like its Tuscan counterparts can only use the designation Vino da Tavola [table wine] but believe me it is far more than that! Deep purple, black in intensity with a bright lively look about it the bouquet is overwhelming. Spicy, peppery [sweet red peppers] with a delicate over-aroma of perfume mixed with subtle fragrances of aromatic herbs and oils. The hint of Cabernet really shows an extra depth here. The palate blew me away! It is such a chunky, mouthful of fruit, flavour and sensations that I hardly know where to start. Rich, full blackcurrants with hints of vanilla, cedar and mint. The finish is intense and long, long lasting. The tannin and acidity is in great balance and will give this wine longevity. It may appear expensive but believe me with a tiny production [2000 bottles only] this wine will be snapped up as soon as it is released - then youll be sorry! Fabulous wine like this does not come along every day!.
Richard Bampfield MW:
(Cask Sample) Highly lifted, tarry, spicy aromas, hints of ginger, undrlying white pepper. Highly pronounced Syrah character. Full bodied, powerful, incredibly intense cauldron of flavours. Structure looks good, should still improve.

Another cracker from the vineyards of Gillardi! Again here, Giovanni and Pinuccia have made a wine from what is considered the third grape of Piedmonte, and made it stunningly well. Bright purple with a fresh intensity that shows it is proud to be young and zestful. The fruit shows up as fresh blackberries and redcurrants and the palate zaps tannic acid fruit across your tongue and makes you wish you had bought more than one bottle for that riverside picnic. Great value!
Richard Bampfield MW:
(Cask Sample) Deep, vivid purple. Intense, ripe aromas, with tones of black cherries and dark chocolate. Ripe, surprisingly generous fruit, packed with flavours, and well balanced by zesty but not shrarp acidity. Quite delicious.
