| MAJNONI GUICCIARDINI CHIANTI
|
Situated in three upland areas, around 150m above sea level between Barberino Val d'Elsa and Certaldo, near San Gimignano is the family-owned Majnoni Guicciardini estate. Out of its 205 hectares around 28 are vineyards, 4.5 to olive groves for olive oil production, and 40 to Mediterranean woodland for various crops. The estate has been in the hands of the Majnoni family for several generations and today it is managed by Pietro Majnoni. Pietro, who lives in a typical Tuscan 'podere' overlooking his vineyards, is a singular man totally committed to producing wines of the highest order exclusively from within its own vineyard from vines with an average age of 20 years.

This is a very traditional Chianti with a good colour that is now mature. It has attractive, warm fruit with tarry richness. Hints of cherries or raspberries makes the bouquet very appealing. The palate is dry with a soft, ripe delicate warmth and richness of flavour. Mature tarry, peppery hints with a good balance of tannins, acidity and fruit. It finishes with lots of pepper and has great grip. a lovely mature Chianti. Superb stuff!
Richard Bampfield MW:
Warm, sweet, cedary aromas, fully mature and with a hint of cherries. Dry, medium bodied palate with soft, sweet fruit and an underlying peppery character. Good length and grip, delicious with pasta dishes.

This Chianti Riserva from a younger vintage shows a brighter,
medium red colour with younger, harder, up-front fruit. The aromas are much tighter with great depth and a cedar-like hint. The palate is up-front and crunchy with hints of cherries and raspberries. Well made with firm tannins and a strong peppery sweetness on a long finish. The success of the older shows that this will continue to age well. Delicious.
Richard Bampfield MW: Black fruit, cherry aromas, nicely perfumed, hint of spice in the background. Youthful, crunchy, cherry flavoured fruit with firm but ripe tannins. Dry and well balanced, can be enjoyed now and will still improve.

Pietro Majnoni considers that the ninety-seven vintage in Tuscany was the best of the decade. This wine bears out his assertion. The bouquet is jam-packed with bags of fruit [raspberries and cherries] and a great balance of acidity. This acidity comes through on the palate but is superbly balanced with loads of rich, ripe fruit and good tannins. This needs time in the bottle to really show its paces but will repay hanging onto it for a year or two. Delicious old fashioned Chianti.
Richard Bampfield MW:
Vivid, youthful colour. Cedary, savoury aromas, a touch of oak apparent, finely judged. Lovely rich, supple fruit flavours, oak adding to flavour and structure but kept in the background. Very complete wine with a long spicy, savoury finish.
